- The retina (and cornea) are windows to the health of the cardiovascular system. We review historical retinal grading systems in the context of a contemporary understanding of simple cardiac biomarkers (Total cholesterol, HDL, LDL, triglycerides) and hidden lipoprotein abnormalities such as B apolipoprotein and LP (a) as well as the Calcium overload hypothesis . The emerging role of hsCRP, homocysteine, antioxidants, ferritin, fibrinogen, and vitamin D insufficiency / deficiency is discussed with respect to actual case presentations.
