Description:
This introductory course will present basic pharmacological principles of oral medication prescribing in the optometric practice. Considerations such as drug selection, special populations, risks, and follow up will be included for antimicrobials and analgesics. Prescribing oral medications requires additional knowledge and awareness of the risks and contraindications for these medications, as compared to topical therapeutic drugs. This course will present the basic pharmacological principles of oral prescribing, using the most commonly used antimicrobials and analgesics as the framework to discuss drug selection, dosing considerations, risks, and contraindications.
