The two courses being offered by Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry in this Advanced Procedures Program thoroughly cover the diverse training needs of optometric physicians pursuing credentials for advanced technical skills. Surgical Procedures for the Optometric Physician presents the educational and technical skills necessary for surgical procedures performed in a primary eye care setting. Topics include OSHA regulations pertaining to optometry practices asepsis injections fluorescein angiography wound management basic suture technique and technique for performing in office surgical procedures. The indications for alternatives to and riskbenefits of all techniques are discussed as well as management of possible complications. In addition to 12 hours of lecture the course includes a four-hour hands-on workshop. Laser Therapy for the Anterior Segment includes the training and opportunity to learn the technical skills required for performing laser procedures such as Posterior Capsulotomy Peripheral Iridotomy and Laser Trabeculoplasty. Therapies are included for open angle glaucoma including SLT and Angle Closure. Twelve hours of lecture are followed by four hours of hands-on laboratory utilizing the ophthalmic lasers. For many years this course has been designated by the Oklahoma Board of Examiners in Optometry for meeting the credentialing requirements leading to Certification in Laser Procedures within the state.
