Dry eye disease (DED) is common but underdiagnosed. Multiple factors contribute to DED development and progression. Excessive evaporation of the tear film due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is a major driver, as is inflammation induced by the resulting tear hyperosmolarity. Both are part of a vicious cycle of DED pathogenesis and pathophysiology. Recent approvals of several therapies for DED have increased the treatment armamentarium, and education is warranted to aid clinicians in selecting the best treatment(s) to target DED in their patients.
